Class Descriptions

STAR Puppy

This class is for owners and puppies 3 to 6 months old.  This is an AKC puppy title program.  It is a foundation for their Canine Good Citizen title program.  STAR represents Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsible owner - all of the things a puppy needs to become a happy member of the family!

Obedience

These classes are for dogs planning to work towards AKC titles. Training is done with reward-based methods that are fun for both the dog and you.  Behavior skills include heeling, staying, accepting a judge's examination, coming when called, off-lead heeling, long sits and downs, retrieving, and jumps. Visit the Performance Obedience page to learn more about the different classes offered at TKC.

Rally

The owner/dog team learns to navigate a course with numbered signs indicating different exercises to perform such as sit-down-sit, circle right, send over jump, and many more without direction from the judge. You are encouraged to talk to your dog throughout the course. This is an AKC title venue.

Agility

One of the ultimate games for both of you!  Learn to traverse an obstacle course sending your dog over jumps, through tunnels, and weaving between poles. This strengthens the bond and provides fun exercise for both of you. Visit the Agility Class page to learn more about the different Agility classes offered at TKC.

Scent Work

AKC Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. AKC Scent Work takes this amazing working relationship and turns it into a fun game that any dog can play.

Family Dog

Every owner and puppy 6 months and older should attend this class! Your dog wants to know how to please you!  You will easily learn to teach your dog the life skills needed to be well-behaved members of society.  The whole family is encouraged to attend, participate, and earn an AKC Canine Good Citizen title!

Conformation

This class is for dogs of any age. Instructors will teach owner/handlers the skills needed to present their dog to the judge to its best advantage in the show ring.

Barn Hunt

The Barn Hunt Association offers this sanctioned sport where any dog can earn a title by locating vermin placed in tubes and hidden in hay bales. The dog must fit through an 18" x 22" hay "tunnel" to be eligible.

Focus

This class has been designed for teams who have completed Puppy Kindergarten and preferably Family Dog and can walk nicely on a leash and work in a group setting. If you haven’t had these specific classes, you need to get permission from the instructor.

Teams will be introduced to the fundamentals and skills needed for agility, obedience, and rally. They will also be introduced to agility equipment. This class is appropriate for young dogs/puppies and will emphasize positive reinforcement/clicker training. With the exception of the recall exercises, exercises will be conducted on leash. Dogs are expected to be wearing a flat buckle collar and handlers may use various sizes of leashes up to 6’ feet in length.
